The 29th Space Design Competition "Visuality of Architecture”

The movement of people, the visual nature of architecture

Architecture is immovable. Therefore, architecture has been photographed a lot since ancient times as a subject that is easy to capture.
Therefore, architecture has been photographed in numerous photographs since ancient times as an object that is easy to capture. On the other hand, some have attempted to express the spatial experience inside architecture by photographing a series of spaces. Some have attempted to express the spatial experience of architectural interiors by capturing a series of spaces in photographs. Today, an increasing number of architectural images are being produced as video works.

"Architecture is easier to understand when seen in photographs than when seen in person."

Walter Benjamin once said in one of his books.
This is a story of space, or architecture alone. The environment and people surrounding the architecture are irrelevant.  It is a story of pure architecture. In contemporary architecture, the interior activities, or programs, are the building's components, along with the architectural space. The architecture of today is composed of the space of the building as well as its internal activities, the so-called program. Therefore, architecture is no longer discussed in terms of space alone, but rather, architecture is discussed with a focus on "what is being done" in "the place".

The focus is on how architecture is used, i.e., the people who use it and the people who are in it. If it were architecture by itself, it would be architecture by itself is an immobile thing, it becomes a dynamic entity depending on people's actions, i.e., "what is being done".What is being done" makes architecture a dynamic entity.

The visual nature of architecture is found in the people who are present with architecture. Architecture is immovable, but it is set in motion by the addition of people.architecture is immovable, but when people join in, architecture begins to move. We would like to reconsider the essence of architecture, which exists not only in the architectural space, but also in "what is being done" in "the place" - architecture that originally exists for the sake of people.

The transparency of glass, which has evolved as a material from modern times to the present, has made it possible to bring the outside view into the architecture and to create a space that is both inside and outside. The transparency of glass, which was intended to be an architectural experience, has been used to bring the outside into the building and to create a continuity between inside and outside. Transparency is not about the experience of the architecture, but about the movement of people. The use of transparency that focuses on the movement of people, rather than on the experience of the architecture, creates a visual quality within the architecture.

Consider elements in architecture that obstruct vision. For example, columns, beams, stairs, floors, shelves, etc.Suppose that the building is made of glass, which is purely transparent. We could open up a few blind spots that we normally could not see.people's movement would become clearer by opening up a few blind spots. People will find dynamic architecture in the new architectural landscape.and begin to notice the richness of movement within the architecture.

Aiming for architecture that accompanies the richness of people's lives.
